My Chosen Genre - Horror
I have decided that for my film marketing campaign I am going to choose to create a film from the horror genre, though I will conduct further research before I decide exactly which sub-genre of horror I am going to work in.
One reason for picking this genre is that many of the films I watch and enjoy belong to the horror genre and I therefore feel I already have a reasonably good understanding of the conventions of the genre. I also find the different themes explored in horror films extremely interesting and I am fascinated by the ways that horror film directors achieve the tense atmosphere, and by the techniques used to create a very unsettling aesthetic.
The horror genre has very distinctive reoccurring conventions that are iconic and instantly recognisable to spectators, such as isolated settings, sinister music and character types such as the monster, the victim and the final girl.
Before coming up with the idea for my film and the content of my marketing materials, I am going to do some further research into aspects of the horror genre to better understand and appreciate the conventions that I am less familiar with in more detail.
In a series of posts I am going to focus on different aspects of genre including iconography (mise-en-scene and lighting), typical character types, narrative structure, film language (cinematography and editing), intended effect, sound, directors associated with the horror genre, alongside exploring horror sub-genres to help me choose exactly which kind of horror film I want to make.
