Analysing Folk Horror Posters - Conclusion

The exact nature of what will appear on a folk horror poster will depend on the narrative of the film, but my research has shown that there are some pretty consistent conventions which occur frequently on posters from this sub-genre.

These include:
  • isolated locations
  • iconography of nature
  • reference to animals
  • a serif font for the copy
  • reference to rituals, ceremonies or sacrifices
  • taglines that directly reference the sub-genre
  • reviews that directly reference the sub-genre, or use language associated with it
  • hints at the 'fish-out-of-water' narrative
  • high certificates/ratings
  • production companies associated with making films from the sub-genre
  • references to other films from within the sub-genre
  • a director who has worked within the sub-genre before
