Analysing Horror Film Trailers - Introduction

Now I have a much better understanding of the conventions of the horror genre after my detailed research, and I am clearer on the general conventions of different styles of trailers (such as theatrical trailers, teaser trailers and TV spots) I am going to have a closer look at some trailers from the horror genre.

My aim is to see how some of the conventions of the genre that I have identified are presented within trailers, so that I can note similarities across trailers for the genre in relation to aesthetics, music, fonts, character types, titles and reviews. This will help me to make some decisions about exactly what to include in my trailers so that they are authentic representations of the style and structure of existing horror film trailers.

I am going to analyse the trailers for the following horror films:

'Smile' (2022)

'M3GAN' (2023)

'Drag Me to Hell' (2009)
