Analysing Horror Film Trailers - 'M3GAN'
The second horror film trailer I am going to analyse is for 'M3GAN'.
The trailer contains the following horror conventions:
- Producer of the film - associated with the genre
- Footage/shots from the film - lots of different scenes from different points in the movie that show threat and menace
- Fades to black
- Change in the pace of the editing - slightly slower towards the beginning (when they are introducing the characters and the narrative) and quicker, montage style of editing towards the end
- We clear sense of the narrative and we are introduced to multiple characters -victims/monster character type, children
- Production company (Blumhouse) - associated with the genre
- Lots of horror 'eye candy' - violent scenes
- Vague release date (This January), plus specific release date (January 13th) at the end of the trailer
- Loud, dramatic music that is appropriate for the genre
- Iconography of the genre (costumes, props, settings)
- Title of the film (towards the end of the trailer) - more Sci-Fi than horror
- Reference to specific formats - such as IMAX and 3D
- Social media and online links
- Production company logos (Blumhouse and Universal)
- Director, writer and screenplay producer names credited at the end - all associated with the genre
