Analysing Horror Film Trailers - 'Drag Me To Hell'

The third horror trailer I am analysing is from 'Drag Me To Hell'.

The trailer contains the following horror conventions:
  • Footage/shots from the film - lots of different scenes from different points in the movie, many featuring unsettling and frightening scenes
  • Fades to black
  • Production company logos (Universal and Ghost House Pictures) - both associated with the horror genre
  • Director - associated with the genre
  • Change in the pace of the editing - slightly slower towards the beginning (when they are introducing the characters and the narrative) and quicker, montage style of editing towards the end
  • We get a much clearer sense of the narrative and we are introduced to multiple characters - both follow the patterns of the genre
  • Vague release date (This May)
  • Loud, dramatic music that is appropriate for the genre
  • Iconography of the genre (costumes, props, settings)
  • Title of the film (towards the end of the trailer) - name references language associated with the genre
  • Advance notice of ticket sales (with a specific date)
  • Social media and online links
  • Production company titles (Universal Pictures, Ghost House Pictures)
  • Reference to certificate/rating ('This film is not yet rated')
