Comparing Different Types of Trailers - 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery'

I wanted to choose a film from a completely different genre to see if the similarities and differences between the types of trailers is consistent regardless of the genre of the film (that is, to confirm it is the medium of trailer rather than genre which contributes most to the form and conventions). The second film I have chosen to compare the theatrical trailer, TV spot and teaser trailer from is 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery', a murder-mystery thriller sequel. This film had a number of each type of trailer, also with lots of TV spots released online in the week before the film's release in cinemas.

'Teaser Trailer'

  • short in length compared to the theatrical trailer (a minute-and-a-half)
  • fast editing as to not give away too much plot information
  • does not contain much narrative information
  • teases audience of cast involved
  • title card of director
  • tagline 'put the pieces together'
  • title card on the screen for significant period of time
  • title card written and directed by rian johson
  • coming soon release date very vague
  • netflix logo

Theatrical Trailer

  • includes much more narrative information
  • specific release date
  • over 2 minutes
  • contains reviews
  • title card on screen for signficant period of time
  • more indication of specific plot lines
  • full cast list
  • title card 'written and directed by rian johsnon'
  • offical release date and rating
  • netflix logo

TV Spot

  • usually very short
  • very fast editing, including lots of clips from the film
  • very action packed
  • very close release date
  • usually contains reviews focusing on pushing audiences to see this film
